Sharing an ISCSI hard drive with two apache web servers from VI: VMware ESXi RSS Feeds

Hi I have two web servers with basic 20GB disks for OS and the like.  On one of the web servers I need to create a second disk, much larger so I can store web data that needs to be read and write. This disc needs to be shared with the second web server, so they both read and write to the same disk.  I know this can be done and was going to install OCFS2 clustered file system on the ubuntu machines to the shared VM disk on web server one. What I need to know is whether there is an easier way of doing this, via NFS or CIFs and if there is does anyone know of some tutorials? My network team say there is no direct access to the SANs as its one an isolated network, so storage has to present itself as a VM with a disk added.  They have also muttered to me that the SANs doesn't support NFS! Does this matter? Cheers in advance for any helpAlbert

SuperMicro X7DVL NIC card drivers from VI: VMware ESXi RSS Feeds

The motherboard has two Intel® (ESB2/Gilgal) 82563EB Dual-port Gigabit Ethernet Controllers and ESXi 5 seems to find them OK but they are not operational. I have 2 identical machines failing the same way, Linux works fine with the LAN ports. I found where I may need to upgrade my LAN drivers but procedure required SSH command line which I can not use because I can not SSH into the machine. Is there a way to get to the command line without being on the network? https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/details?productId=284&downloadGroup=DT-ESXI5X-INTEL-IGB-42163

P2V Cluster from VI: VMware ESXi RSS Feeds

Good Afternoon All, I have a question in regards to clustering of a Physical server with a Virtual one using ESXi VMFS RDM.  I have a 3 node Veritas cluster with 3 SQL instances running on Windows 2008 R2 SP1 that will be on RAID-5 VSP owned LUNs. Each server is the fail over for the other one but the order is always physical to physical and lastly to VM.  If the fail over of an instance occurs to the VM, I have a concern that the Windows NTFS bock size will not be the same from the VM size. As you know NTFS has a 4KB block size for up to 16TB where VMFS has 1MB+. My question is that when the LUN(s) are presented to VM via RDM, would VMFS force its blocksize or would OS be the determining factor since VMFS is only a mapping at that point to present LUN via Fiber directly to OS? In addition since Veritas has it abstraction layer as volume manager, wont it stop creation of any other block sizes? Thank you!

Datastore not available. Lun ok, Partition issue from VI: VMware ESXi RSS Feeds

All,After a consecutive set of drive failures on a RAID-5 disk ( Dell 2970, Perc 6/i) forced drive replacements- the RAID-5 has finished it's rebuild and there is a single Lun that appears in the Storage Adapters list but has disappeared from the Storage volumes list. The log indicates an error with the partition table:Jul 26 17:34:24 Hostd: [2013-07-26 17:34:24.681 'Partitionsvc' 16384 info] Error Stream from partedUtil while getting partitions: Error: The partition table on /dev/disks/vml.02000000006001ec90f77b73001163b08e1403e788504552432036 is inconsistent.  There are many reasons why this might be the case.  However, the most likely reason is that Linux detected the BIOS geometry for /dev/disks/vml.02000000006001ec90f77b73001163b08e1403e788504552432036 incorrectly.  GNU Parted suspects the real geometry should be 25000/64/32 (not 3187/255/63).  You should check with your BIOS first, as this may not be correct.  You can inform Linux by adding the parameter disks/vml.02000000006001ec90f77b73001163b08e1403e788504552432036=25000,64,32 to the command line.  See the LILO or GRUB documentation for more information.  If you think Parted's suggested geometry is correct, you may select Ignore to continue (and fix Linux later).  Otherwise, select Cancel (and fix Linux and/or the BIOS now).   There are a multitude of VM's on this data-store that I would like to retrieve intact. The question is exactly how to do this. I have read the KB(1002281) about rebuilding a partition table and am prepared to execute this but I'm curious if there is any other "recovery" tricks that can resolve the issue. Environment- Dell 2970, RAID-5  missing a single volume data store ( 1.4TB in size) all other data storage on the "failed" RAID-5 recovered correctly.ESX Server 3i Version 3.5.0 Build 283373 Thanks for any help/advice.

Hi people, we've got an issue with a disk on the array directly attached to our server. We changed the disk and it seems the raid managed to reconstruct itself now we can see the lun into storage adapter menu http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/2932/csln.pngBut nothing shows up in the storage menu (refresh has been done several time) here are some command i made to help for the investigation [root@ZD0-ESPESXSR001 dev]# esxcfg-vmhbadevs -avmhba0:0:0     /dev/sda [root@ZD0-ESPESXSR001 dev]# esxcfg-vmhbadevs -m[2013-07-26 17:17:01 'StorageInfo' warning] Skipping dir: /vmfs/volumes/49ba4592-c97bf108-bfdd-0010184d03ee. copy of flat.vmdk after raid-crash contains old data-state? from VI: VMware ESXi RSS Feeds

Hello community, I will explain the hole story for better understanding - even if that is not necessary. last saturday our server was not reachable anymore. i logged in into the VMware vSphere-Client and tried to connect to the virtual host of our server. there was a bluescreen.  first i started to reboot the virtual machine and it tried to start but the explorer didn't start correctly: no taskbar, only a command-window, i think it was the one i put someday in the autostart. i waited, but nothing changed - it didn't react on STRG+ALT+DEL. i tried to reboot the VM a second time. now i got the error-message, that the Virtual HDD-File could not be accessed. This Virtual HDD-File contains our hole business-data, which was mapped to drive E:\ in the VM. The System itself was located on a RAID1 and is still working without a problem. After the Problem with the Access of the Vritual-HDD i restarted the ESXI. The HP ProLiant RAID-Controller told me, there is a problem with the RAID5 (which contains the corrupted virtual HDD), and gave me the option to choose between F1 (continue) and F2 (enable and continue, can cause data loss). i tried with F1. the complete RAID5 was not available in ESXI. I rebooted again and choose F2 (maybe i mix something up here and it was F1 and F2 at the first boot...). now the RAID5 was listed in VMware vSphere-Client again. I tried again to start the Virtual Machine, but still the same error. Then i tried to download the Virtual HDD (vmdk) to a local usb-drive of the vsphere-client-machine for backup. After 3,1GB it stopped with an E/A-Error. I tried this again, same problem. At the next reboot the RAID-Controller told me, that he has found previewosly interrupted repair-process and if i want to continue - i said yes. i continued the boot-process and tried to download the VMDK-file again, and it did stop exactly at the same point after 3,1GB. Now i logged in via SSH and did a dd of the corrupted RAID5 to another RAID5 on the same machine wiht skipping errors. some hours later it told me that it has copied everything expect one block. after this has been finised i rebooted and in the vSphere-Client the Name of the corrupted RAID5 appeared as second disk, while the first disk was completely unavailable as it was before - i'm not sure if i did press F1 at boot-time and this is the reason for this. anyway, now i'm working with this DD-Copy on the second RAID5. I could apply the Virtual-HDD on this RAID5 to the VM and boot again. unfortunately windows wanted to initialize the disk. i aborted the initalizing and started the newest testdisk version to figure out if there is a anywhere a functional partition-table. After a deeper search (finished this day in the morning after some selfmade interrupts in the last two days...) it has found some entries which contains the correct Partition-Name called "Daten" - this is german for data, but at the end of the deeper search it told me that it cannot restore this partition because the disk seems too small. the end-cylinder of the partition which has been found by testdisk is bigger than the last cylinder of the disk - if the data which testdisk displays is correct. so i added a partition manually with the start-values of the automatically founded partition and set the end-values to the last values of the disk. i did press P to display files of this partition and was very happy to see the content of our E:\ - i started to recover some small files for testing and then i was wondering about the date. all data which is displayed in testdisk has date-stamps from at least may 2012. some folders are missing completely. the folder which i recoverd for testing is called "remoteaccess" and contains some RDP-Connections and so on. testdisk shows me only old data, also data which has been deleted already. this old data can be restored and the data is usable also, but i want to have the new data-state. it seems to me that the flat.vmdk is a kind of a snapshot - but iv'e never created one by myselfe. also, the virtual hdd was created as static. my simple question now is: can somebody explain me, where this old data-state cames from and where the new one could be located?as far as i don't understand this, i cannot continue the recovery-process without destroy more of the maybe still recoverable data.  right at the moment i do a backup of the state from may 2012 to an external usb-disk - better than nothing. but when this is finished, i'm not sure how to continue with the process. and yes, shame on me, we don't have a complete backup of this data from this corrupted raid5, but the data is extreme important for us. it contains our complete exchange-database with all our mails and all opened tasks of our customers, it contains also customer-projects, hours with coded c++-stuff and so on... :-( any hint or help would be great!  and please dont tell me, that i should open a case at vmware -  i will do that if there is no other way, but my experience tell's me, that if i cannot solve this by myselfe, the vmware-specialists will not be able also, this is the reason why i try this first by myselfe! if somebody could give me the guarantee that he would recover my complete lost data i would spent him another 300 euros and more! thanks in advanceandi

Hi, what is the relationship or matrix of different Esxi update patch ? from VI: VMware ESXi RSS Feeds

Hi, Sir,I am a little new to Vmware, just a basic question but has been harassing me for a long time.  one of my customer is sitting in ESXi 4.1.0 Build 721871, then it means it has been patched only by Esxi410-201206001?  this patch incorporate other patched in lower positon ? or it has been patched all the including low level ? what is the relationship or matrix of different Esxi update patch ?  Try to think assumption: if we only patch Esxi410-201011001 and Esxi410201201001 in base version 4.1.0 build 260247, then which build number it should show up? I am doing advisory analysis and version evolution, then I should have very clear idea of those patches relationship or Matrix in Vmware production. thanks.
