This is a free and open-source file encryption solution based on the original EncFS code. Cryptonite is fully compatible with all EncFS features. Cryptonite brings EncFS and TrueCrypt to Android. On rooted phones that support FUSE (e.g. CyanogenMod) you can also mount EncFS and TrueCrypt volumes.

Guardian ROM is a custom android ROM for Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 devices. The ROM is completely Open Source and based off of the Android Open Source Project. The ROM aims to due the following:

Secure/Harden the android kernel with GRSecurity
Remove uneeded/Insecure binaries (Similar to SecDroid)
Replace insecure Text Messaging app with TextSecure
Include apps from the Guardian Project Installer (Optional add-on)
Include support for SQLCipher
Change Android Full Disk Encryption from AES-128 to AES-256 for more security
Allow for seperate Login and boot passwords
All of these have been completed except the final three which are underway but will take much more time.

K-9 is an opensource email client based on the Email application shipped with the initial release of Android.
K-9 is focused on making it easy to chew through large volumes of email.

Description:

Google apps track users more than most other apps as they are system-apps and therefore have full rights on android.

There are several problems with avoiding Google apps:

You won't get regular updates for your apps. Google's apps are not bad in functionality, but are in privacy.

No access to Play Store (There are many alternative markets, but nothing is as good for free apps as Play Store) Meanwhile, F-Droid provides nearly everything you need.

Some apps do not install because of missing Google Maps API

Some apps Force Close at start-up because of missing Maps API or market license check issues

Some apps hard-coded links to several Google Apps and therefore Force Close or react unexpectedly on certain cases.

This is a simple open-source notepad app which demonstrates the capability of the SQLCipher for Android encrypted database library. All notes created and stored by this app are saved fully secured using industry standard 256-bit AES encryption. They are never stored in an unencrypted state on the disk, only in memory.

Replicant is a free and open source operating system based on the Android mobile platform, which aims to replace all proprietary Android components with their free software counterparts. It is available for several smartphones and tablet computers.

SecDroid hardens the android kernel by disable certain binaries that have internet access or can be used as an attack vector and by securing the TCP Stack using Systctl. This helps prevent some MITM (Man-In-The-Middle) and Spoofing attacks. It may also prevent some DOS (Denial-Of-Service) Attacks.

TWRP is a custom recovery built with ease of use and customization in mind. XPrivacy can prevent applications from leaking privacy sensitive data. XPrivacy can restrict the categories of data an application can access. This is done by feeding an application with no or fake data. There are several data categories which can be restricted, for example contacts or location. For example, if you restrict access to contacts for an application, this will result in sending an empty contact list to the application. Similarly, restricting an application's access to your location will result in a set location being sent to the application.
